MANUAL HANDLING HALF DAY COURSE

'Reducing the risk of manual handling injuries through practical training'

This half day course is designed to provide delegates with a complete understanding of manual handling including legislation, hazards and injuries caused by poor manual handling techniques together with practical training on how to carry out manual handling operations correctly and safely.

COURSE CONTENT

The course covers the following aspects:
  • Definitions of hazardous manual handling and the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992
  • Hazards and risks associated with manual handling activities.
  • Identification of the various types of manual handling.
  • Assessing the load and environment.
  • Practical demonstrations and assessments.
The benefits of this course are employees are trained to assess the whole range of manual handling risks they could face and the appropriate action they should take coupled with practical exercises and assessments to ensure they fully understand the regulations and best practice.

DISPLAY SCREEN EQUIPMENT ASSESORS COURSE

'Providing your employee's with the skills and knowledge to undertake workstation assessments'

This one day course is designed for those persons responsible for undertaking display screen equipment assessments. The course is aimed at providing delegates with the knowledge and skills to undertake basic DSE assessments within their own organisation.

COURSE CONTENT

The course is split into six modules which include:

MORNING SESSION
  • Introduction to the Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992 and the Health and Safety (Miscellaneous) Regulations 2002.
    • Key terms and definitions.
    • Workstation requirements.
    • Daily work routine of users.
    • Eye and eyesight test requirements.
    • Information, instruction and training on DSE.
    • Home workers.
    • Use of lap tops.
  • Health problems associated with work on DSE including repetitive strain injury, work related upper limb disorders, stress and pregnancy.
  • Solutions to common DSE complaints.
  • How to record, monitor and when to review DSE assessments.
AFTERNOON SESSION
  • Practical session on how to set up a workstation correctly, including the questions to ask the user and the action to take.
  • A review of each delegate's assessment will be carried out to ensure that all relevant points and suggested recommendations are completed.
Each delegate gets the opportunity to complete a DSE assessment questionnaire and undertake a practical DSE assessment.

Each delegate will receive a certificate of attendance, course notes and details on additional support provided by Positive Steps.

DISPLAY SCREEN EQUIPMENT USERS COURSE

'Providing employees with effective information, instruction and training on the use of DSE'

This half day course is designed for those persons who use display screen equipment as part of their normal work routine in order to provide them with information on how to sit at their workstation correctly and how to prevent problems associated with the use of display screen equipment.

COURSE CONTENT

The course is split into five modules which include:
  • Brief overview of the (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992 and the Health and Safety (Miscellaneous) Amendment Regulations 2002.
    • Key terms and definitions.
    • Workstation requirements.
    • Work routines and how to plan regular breaks.
    • Employers and employees responsibilities for eye and eyesight tests.
    • Information, instruction and training on DSE.
  • Health problems associated with work on DSE including repetitive strain injury, work related upper limb disorders, stress and pregnancy.
  • The correct posture to be adopted.
  • Home working.
  • Laptops.

DISABILITY AWARENESS TRAINING COURSE

'For persons wishing to gain an understanding of the access issues disabled persons face'

This half day course is designed for companies and individuals who wish to gain an understanding of the needs of disabled persons accessing the built environment.

COURSE CONTENT

The course is split into eight modules
  • Overview of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 and 2005.
  • Definitions of disability – medical and social model.
  • Disability quiz and statistics.
  • Types of disabilities, their needs and ways in which to assist persons with a disability.
  • Disability etiquette.
  • Enforcement of the DDA.
  • Facts and figures quiz.
  • Question and answer session.
This course gives delegates the opportunity to understand the needs of persons with disabilities and the ways in which assistance can be provided, as well as physical changes within a building which could assist disabled persons.

The course consists of practical sessions, quizzes and the opportunity for a question and answer session at the end of the course.

Each delegate will receive a certificate of attendance, course notes and quiz answers.

FIRE SAFETY AWARENESS COURSE

'Enabling employees to take the appropriate action in the event of a fire'

This half day awareness course is designed to give all delegates a basic understanding of the action to be taken in the event of a fire and general fire prevention within the workplace.

COURSE CONTENT

The course is split into four modules
  • Overview of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005
  • Fire prevention within the workplace including:
    • The fire triangle.
    • General sources of ignition.
    • Other sources of ignition.
    • Types of fire extinguishers and when they should be used.
  • Fire procedures:
    • Action on discovering a fire.
    • Raising the alarm.
    • Alerting the emergency services.
    • Use of portable fire fighting equipment.
    • Evacuating the building.
    • Fire warden's duties in the event of a fire.
    • Fire Officer's duties.
  • Question and answer session.

'Ensuring the safe and swift evacuation of a premises in the event of a fire'

This half day awareness course is designed to train delegates in their duties as a Fire Warden within their workplace.

COURSE CONTENT

The course is split into five modules
  • Overview of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005
  • Fire prevention within the workplace including:
    • The fire triangle.
    • General sources of ignition.
    • Other sources of ignition.
    • Types of fire extinguishers and when they should be used.
  • Human action in the event of a fire including case examples.
  • Fire Wardens roles and responsibilities including:
    • Daily routine duties within their area.
    • Emergency duties in the event of a fire to cover:
      • Action on discovering a fire.
      • Raising the alarm.
      • Alerting the emergency services.
      • Sweep and evacuate routine.
      • Use of portable fire fighting equipment.
      • Evacuating the building.
      • Roll call duties.
      • Liaising with the Fire Officer.
      • General safety rules to be followed.
  • Question and answer session.

ASBESTOS AWARENESS COURSE

'Providing delegates with an understanding of asbestos and potential exposure issues'

This half day awareness course is designed to give all delegates an understanding of what asbestos is and the dangers associated with exposure to asbestos.

COURSE CONTENT

The course is split into five modules
  • Overview of the Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations 2006
  • Types of asbestos available, where asbestos is found, trades commonly exposed to asbestos.
  • Health implications related to asbestos exposure.
  • Action to be taken on discovering asbestos or potential asbestos.
  • Question and answer session.
Our training is provided by our consultant who is qualified in P405 'Management of Asbestos in Buildings' which is awarded by the British Occupational Hygiene Society.

Each delegate will receive a certificate of attendance and course handout notes.

HEALTH AND SAFETY (MIX AND MATCH) AWARENESS COURSE

'Introducing employers and employees to health and safety within the workplace'

This one day awareness course is designed to give all delegates an understanding of general health and safety hazards within their own working environment. Positive Steps suggest a maximum of 8 modules in addition to the two recommended introductory modules provided:

COURSE CONTENT

The course should not have more than 10 modules and include as a minimum:
  • Overview of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999.
  • Employers and employees responsibilities for health and safety within the workplace.
OPTIONS (a maximum of eight modules should be picked)
  • Accident and incident reporting.
  • First aid arrangements.
  • General workplace health and safety.
  • COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health).
  • Use of Display Screen Equipment.
  • Basic manual handling techniques (no practical session included).
  • Lone working and violence within the workplace.
  • Company car driving.
  • Control of contractors.
  • New and expectant mothers.
  • Working at height.
  • Use of work equipment.
  • Electrical safety.
  • Personal protective equipment.
  • Stress.
  • Home working.
  • Management of plant and equipment within the premises.
  • Emergency procedures including bomb threat/alert, power failure, flooding etc.
  • Asbestos within the workplace.
  • Water hygiene and requirements for drinking water.
  • Smoking within the workplace.
  • Safety within warehouses.
  • Vehicular movement within the premises.

CDM AWARENESS TRAINING

'Assisting employees in understanding the requirements of projects under the CDM Regulations'

This half day awareness course is designed to give all delegates an understanding of the risks involved with working on construction phase projects and the requirements of the CDM regulations.

COURSE CONTENT

The course is split into six modules
  • Overview of the Construction, Design and Management Regulations 2007 including the ACOP.
  • How the delegates own competency may be assessed to meet the regulations.
  • Duties of Key Holders.
  • Co-operation and co-ordination of projects.
  • Contents of the Construction Phase Plan.
  • Question and answer session.

BASIC FIRST AID 'APPOINTED PERSONS' TRAINING – ONE DAY COURSE

'Providing delegates with life saving skills'

This one day course is designed for persons who are nominated as an 'Appointed Person' within the workplace. This course is the minimum requirement any employer should have where a first aider is not deemed necessary.

The course content includes:
  • Personal safety in an emergency situation.
  • Primary and secondary assessment.
  • Priorities, DRAB check and sending for help.
  • Recovery position.
  • C.P.R. (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation).
  • Choking.
  • Heart attacks/strokes.
  • Bleeding.
  • Burns and scalds.
  • Other medical emergencies.
  • Contents of a first aid kit.
  • Reporting of accidents and incidents.
This course consists of practical demonstrations and a theory test. The course requires delegates to achieve a certain level of competency in order to ensure that they can fulfil their role as an appointed person.

Each delegate will receive a certificate of attendance which is valid for three years and be provided with a first aid pack which includes all the first aid training received during the course.
